Arresting sound & vibration ! A major luxury hotel in a metro city had a unique problem. They could not rent out rooms on one whole floor. There was so much vibration on that floor that a water glass kept on a table would start ‘dancing’. This was a serious problem that the hotel wanted to resolve immediately. Josts was given the contract by the hotel to play ‘noise and vibration detectives’ to identify the sources of vibrations causing a whole floor to be kept vacant and to recommend solutions to eliminate these. A luxury hotel is very similar to a ship, if you take into consideration the amount, number and type of machinery used in both. There are big boilers, incinerators, chillers, air handling units, pumps, motors, compressors..you name it. Identifying what was causing one floor to ‘vibrate’ was a complex assignment, which is what Josts specialises in. |

Measurements were carried out at different locations in the hotel, on different machineries with advanced vibration and sound analyzers. Frequency analysis was done at all locations. It took Josts’ engineers three days to carry out all the measurements and do the analysis. The problem was traced to a bank of pumps. Once the source was identified, it was easy to eliminate it with the use of suitable vibration isolating mounting pads. Here also Josts’ engineers studied various types available and recommended the right one for this application. Needless to say, the floor is no longer vacant ! |
